Chapter 17, Section 1702 of 2006 IBC defines Special Inspection as:
“Inspection as herein required of the materials, installation, fabrication, erection or placement of components and connections requiring special expertise to ensure compliance with approved construction documents and referenced standards."
The California Building Code (CBC) Chapter 17, dictating Special Inspection (SI) of structures, has been adopted by many jurisdictions in the state. The purpose of Special Inspections is to evaluate construction elements for conformance of the work and materials with project specifications and applicable building codes, ultimately in the interest of public safety. The Special Inspector will report back to the Engineer of Record (EOR) and the Building Official (BO), at a minimum, stating whether work performed by contractors and sub-contractors is or is not in conformance with the project plans, specifications, standards or building codes.
Under the California Building Code Chapter 17, Section 1704.3 reads: "Statement of special inspections- Where special inspection or testing is required by Section 1705, the registered design professional in responsible charge shall perepare a statement of special inspections in accordance with Section 1704.3.1 for submittal by the applicant."
The above statement is a conditional requirement prior to the issuance of a building permit by most jurisdictions.
A statement of special inspection will typically include:
1. Materials, components, systems and work required to have special inspection or testing required.
2. The type and extent of each special inspection.
3. The type and extent of each test.
4. Additional requirements for wind or seismic resistance.
5. Identification as to continuous or periodic special inspection.
In short, special inspections are required for most construction projects, call or text us today with any questions you may have.
